While a number of stakeholders are providing relief items to Cyclone Freddy survivors in various evacuation camps in southern region, a Zomba-based arts theatre group known as Ng’oma has taken a different approach as it is providing them with psychosocial support through drama. The group’s Director Alfred Mandalawe Junior, says he thought of coming up with the initiative as one way of dealing with depression of the survivors and having also noted that most well-wishers are just focusing on donating relief items only.”We would like to rescue the lives of these survivors through drama because some are traumatized and depressed which can lead to committing suicide. In fact, I also heard that a survivor at Lake Chilwa committed suicide after losing all his properties and livestock. So we want to reduce such cases,” said Mandalawe.He added: “I have well experienced and talented members who know how to sensitize the masses on different aspects through drama. We are ready to reach out to all camps in the country but what we are asking from stakeholders is transport.”Meanwhile, the group has been provided with some bicycles by some well-wishers which the group will use for the three days they will be performing in different evacuation camps in Zomba starting from tomorrow (Thursday) to Sunday.By Taona Mkandawire, Correspondent#montfortmediIn the picture is Alfred Mandalawe Junior.
