Malawi’s need for inspiring leaders

Towards the 2019 tripartite elections, Malawians felt electorally rich. The names of Saulos Chilima and Lazarus Chakwera gave electorates wider choices, particularly among those who did not want the return of Peter Mutharika and his DPP. The campaign period was just magnificent. 

Obviously, identity and regional politics were at play, particularly for Mutharika and Chakwera. Indeed, the electoral outcome saw Mutharika winning the election with a large share of the southern region vote. Chakwera came second after benefiting immensely from the central region vote. For Chilima, a fresher, he scored well in the North and trailed in third position.
