Two arrested over possession of dangerous drugs in Lilongwe
Police in Lilongwe, on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 arrested two women, for being found in possession of dangerous (controlled) drugs suspected to be Ephedrine without a licence.
According to Inspector Hastings Chigalu Lilongwe Police, Public Relations Officer, the suspects have been identified as Beatrice Kaunda, 19, of Kande Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mankhambera, Nkhata-Bay, and Sekai Chiwala, 46, Masaliyele Village, T/A Mkanda, in Mchinji District.
Chigalu said on the said date, the suspects had in their possession a carton indicating to have contained mesh that was headed for Phillipines, through one of the local courier services.
When handling process of the parcel started, the courier officials were not conviced with the alleged contents of the carton, so, they demanded a physical check.
After opening the parcel it’s when they discovered the dangerous drugs concealed inside.
Immediately, Lilongwe Police detectives were called in to handle the situation. They arrested the suspects and seized the drugs.
Upon interrogation, the suspects alleged that they were given the parcel by a certain Nigerian national who is a close neighbour to one of the suspect, to send it abroad.
Efforts to trace and arrest the alleged owner of the parcel are at an advanced stage now. The drugs have been sent to Pharmacy, Medicines and Regulatory Authority (PMRA) for analysis.
The suspects are currently in police custody waiting to appear in court to answer a case of ‘Found In Possession of Dangerous Drugs which contravenes Regulation 4A as Read with Section 19 (1) of Dangerous Drugs Act’.
Meanwhile, Lilongwe Police is advising people to take extra caution whenever they are being suspiciously sent by certain individuals on such errands.
