By Faith Kaisi Mathotho

While all Catholics all over the world celebrated the first week of Lent, Montfort Media Chapel in Balaka celebrated both the first week of Lent and 40 years of existence since its establishment. Gracing the occasion was Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa of Blantyre Arch-diocese and Fr Blaise Jailosi General Manager of Montfort Media Ltd, who were the first postulants of Montfort Seminary in 1986. Also present during the mass were Bishop Alessandro Pagani, Bishop-Emeritus of Mangochi Diocese, Fr Piergiorgio Gamba, Superior of Montfort Media Community and Fr Samuel Satiel, the Parish priest of Balaka Catholic Parish.

In his opening remarks, Archbishop Msusa expressed his joy to return to Montfort Media Chapel, tracing his early footsteps towards serving God. He also invited people to observe Lent through intensifying prayer, and showing acts of kindness by helping the needy and reflecting God’s love in all we do. Fr Blaise, in his homily, reminded the Christians the need to return to the original joyful plan of God depicted in the garden of Eden before the fall of Adam and Eve. He emphasised the need to learn from Jesus Christ in conquering evil by leading a life of love. This can be shown by refraining from any form of gender-based violence and child abuse, disrespecting the dignity of every human being and selfish living.

In short all were invited to live God’s life and love here and now. Fr Gamba reminded that coinciding with this 40th Anniversary, is the 125th Anniversary (25th July, 1901) of Catholic Presence in Malawi whose celebration will be held in Mzama Parish, in Ntcheu District, in August. The pictures below show some of the activities at the 40th Anniversary at Montfort Media Chapel on Sunday, 22nd February, 2026.
