The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Thoko Tembo has commended members of Chimkhwamba Goat Producers and Marketing Cooperative in Balaka District for making notable progress in commercial goat production under the Agriculture Commercialisation (AGCOM) Project.

Speaking during a visit to the cooperative on Wednesday, 21 January  2025, the Deputy Minister said the strides being made by farmers, demonstrate how organised farmer groups can transform agriculture into a viable business. Tembo noted that goat production is an important source of income, especially in semi-arid districts such as Balaka.

The visit to Chimkhwamba forms part of the Deputy Minister’s official programme in the district, which also includes a visit to Muthe Rice Producers and Marketing Cooperative, another AGCOM-supported organisation. At Muthe, farmers are engaged in rice production using both rain-fed and irrigation farming systems, contributing to improved food security and household incomes.

The Deputy Minister said government remains committed to supporting farmer organisations that embrace commercial agriculture and climate-resilient farming practices.

Meanwhile, as part of efforts to strengthen agricultural extension service delivery, AGCOM is expected to hand over 40 motorcycles to the Ministry of Agriculture. The motorcycles will enhance mobility for extension workers, enabling them to effectively support farmers at community level.

The AGCOM project is implemented by the Government of Malawi, with financial support from the World Bank and aims to commercialise agriculture by improving productivity, market access and value addition among smallholder farmers.
