Youth rooted in Christ, sent for mission

  By Fr. Chris Sichinga

This year, the Church in Malawi joyfully celebrates 125 years of evangelisation under the theme: “Rooted in Christ, Sent for Mission.” To be rooted in Christ means more than just attending Sunday Mass. It means letting Jesus shape your identity, your choices, and your dreams. St. Paul reminds us: “Live your lives in Christ, rooted and built up in him” (Colossians 2:6-7). Dear young people, you are not just the future of the Church, you are its vibrant present. Let me share three invitations for you as we celebrate this milestone:

Challenge 1: Build a strong Catholic identity

You were baptized and sent. That means your life already carries a mission. Be a youth who finds joy in Christ and stands firm in faith. Be proud of your Catholic identity and let your lives shine as a witness of hope. Bring Christ into your schools, workplaces, and friendships. Remember: The Church in Malawi is counting on you to carry the torch forward.

Challenge 2: Live with purpose

A tree with deep roots survives storms. In the same way, a youth rooted in Christ can face trials without losing direction. Dream big but stay grounded in faith. Let challenges strengthen you, not break you. Use your energy, creativity, and talents to serve Christ. Join small Christian communities, volunteer in parish activities, and let your gifts be a flame that keeps the Church alive and youthful.

Challenge 3: Take part in the mission

Your faith is not just personal, it is missionary. Every choice you make can evangelize. Show integrity in your studies. Be compassionate to the marginalized and stand for truth, even when it’s hard. Never forget: your faith rests on the sacrifices of missionaries, priests, sisters, and lay faithful who came before you. Gratitude is the first step in carrying their mission forward.

A word of hope

As we celebrate 125 years of the Catholic Church in Malawi, let us look back with thanksgiving, live the present with responsibility, and face the future with hope. Dear youth, the Church needs your passion, creativity, and courage. Be rooted in Christ and let your life be a mission of love.

Note: The main celebration will be held on September 19, 2026, at St. Mary’s (Nzama) Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Dedza.
